Desired start date:
September 1, 2024
Location: Anywhere in B.C.

Dogwood is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization working in the unceded Indigenous territories known as British Columbia.

Dogwood brings people together to transform our democracy, uphold Indigenous rights and defend the climate, land and water that sustain life in B.C. With our allies, we work to break free from fossil fuels, supercharge decarbonization, and counter corporate influence on our democracy and rising right-wing narratives. All of this work takes place on unceded, stolen Indigenous territories amidst ongoing colonial violence, racial injustices and profound wealth inequalities. Thus, Dogwood will contribute, always, to the generations-long project of repairing the injustices of colonialism and dismantling systems of oppression.

We currently have 16 staff members, sustaining a network of over 100,000 supporters and anchoring volunteer teams in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island.

Dogwood strives to reflect its values in the workplace. The organization is led by an Executive Team of four people. In this collaborative leadership arrangement, each Director has a core area of responsibility and shares executive responsibility for managing the organization’s strategy, structure, culture, finances and legal obligations. Non-executive staff at Dogwood are unionized with the B.C. General Employees Union (BCGEU).

We currently have an opening for the Director of People, Culture and Impact on Dogwood’s Executive Team.

This is an ideal role for someone who cares about people, values collaboration and has a passion for process. In the role you would:

  • Work closely with the Directors of Operations, Organizing, and Communications & Campaigns to lead the organization.
  • Support the success of Dogwood’s governance model as the primary Executive liaison to the board of directors and administrative coordinator of the Executive Team.
  • Ensure Dogwood lives up to its justice, equity, decolonization and inclusion commitments and goals.
  • Oversee Human Resources services, policies and legal obligations.
  • Manage core processes for the organization such as strategic planning, annual planning and evaluation.
  • Serve as the primary labour relations representative from Dogwood management, including bargaining, implementing and upholding the collective agreement between Dogwood and the BCGEU.
  • Support a talented, passionate and diverse staff doing exciting, innovative and challenging social change work.
  • Participate in fund development for the organization

To be considered for this position, you should have:

  • Two years experience in a management-level or executive leadership role;
  • At least one year of experience managing, developing or creating Human Resources services, policies, procedures or obligations;
  • A demonstrated ability to manage projects and/or processes;
  • A commitment to justice, equity, decolonization and anti-oppression and experience applying that commitment in a work environment;
  • Enthusiasm about shared leadership and pay equity;
  • A commitment to Dogwood’s mission to decolonize, decarbonize and democratize B.C.

We recognize that often the most valuable experience comes from learning on the job. If some of these qualifications would be growth areas for you, we encourage you to apply and identify where you have expertise or where you have a foundation for further learning.

Additional Experience and Skills

These are not requirements, but personal strengths, knowledge, lived experience, training or aptitudes in these areas would be considered additional assets in this role and we encourage you to highlight them in your application.

  • Experience shaping or leading strategic or annual planning processes
  • Experience working with a board of directors
  • Experience working in a unionized workplace, particularly in a labour relations role
  • Administrative coordination and/or executive support experience
  • Professional training or certification in HR, management or administration

  • Group facilitation experience
  • Demonstrated skill in listening and synthesizing information
  • Experience in fundraising

Dogwood is committed to becoming a workplace where people of diverse identities, backgrounds and abilities want to work and feel safe working, including in leadership positions. We particularly encourage applications from Black, Indigenous and people of colour; people of all gender identities and diverse abilities. Dogwood strives not to discriminate based on race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, political belief, age, gender, sexual orientation or class.

We recognize that Dogwood’s unique workplace structure means we cannot offer the same level of salary that a non-profit Executive Director might earn. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced manager to live their values as part of a shared leadership team in service of a social change mission. While we can’t offer high salaries, we strive to provide generous benefits and a rewarding work environment including:

  • a flexible 30-hour work week schedule;
  • options for office-based, hybrid or remote work;
  • minimum five weeks of paid leave starting in your first year;
  • enrolment in the CAAT Pension Plan with 2% employer matching contribution;
  • full family extended health benefits including dental, vision, paramedical and mental health support;
  • additional $400 Health Spending Account;
  • regular opportunities for staff connection, development and fun at semi-annual in-person meetings.
