Guujaaw, the visionary President of the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN), was overwelmingly reelected by the Haida. Rumour has it that one motivation for the provincial Crown’s Sept. 6 offer of a land package that includes “control” of 20% of Haida Gwaii was to foment opposition against Guujaaw as CHN President.

Guujaaw has worked with the CHN for the past 20 years to secure the protection of the Islands and to ensure the sustainable use of Island resources. He was in the forefront of the fight for the protection of Gwaii Haanas (South Moresby) and took part in the blockades of logging operations at Lyell Island in the mid 1980s.

Today, he is a member of the executive of the Coastal nations of turning Point and the Steering committee of the newly formed Title & Rights Alliance. He also serves as amemeber of the Archipelago Management Board which co-manages (with the Government of Canada), Gwaii Haanas.
